Engineering giant Smiths Group discloses security breach

London-based engineering giant Smiths Group disclosed a security breach after unknown attackers gained access to the company’s systems.

Smiths is a British multinational listed on the London Stock Exchange that employs more than 15,000 people in over 50 countries. It also provides products to customers in the energy, safety, security, aerospace, and defense markets and reported £3,132 million in revenue last year.

In a Tuesday filing with the London Stock Exchange, the engineering firm said it’s investigating a “cyber security incident” involving “unauthorised access to the Company’s systems.”

“As soon as Smiths became aware of the unauthorised activity, the Company rapidly isolated affected systems and activated business continuity plans,” the company said.

“Smiths is working with cyber security experts to recover affected systems and determine any wider impact on the business.”

It also added that it is currently taking all necessary measures to comply with all relevant regulatory requirements and promised to provide an update when more information becomes available.

The engineering company has yet to share when the breach was detected and if any business or customer data was stolen during the incident.

A Smiths spokesperson didn’t address requests for more information regarding the breach from BleepingComputer earlier today.

Last week, American business services firm and government contractor Conduent also revealed that a recent outage was caused by a “cyber security incident.”

This came days after Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced that it was investigating claims of a new breach after a threat actor claimed they stole documents from the company’s developer environments.

One week earlier, U.K. domain registry Nominet confirmed that its network was breached in early January using an Ivanti VPN zero-day vulnerability. This vulnerability was also exploited in attacks linked to a suspected China-linked espionage group tracked as UNC5337.
